Olukunle Owolabi

I am a Lead Engineer within Meta AI where I support large scale AI products that power the Facebook Feed. Broadly conceived, my experience spans LLMs, recommender systems, anomaly and fraud detection, forecasting, and optimization. In my earlier stint at Meta, I worked in the infrastructure space developing efficient ML driven systems for MySQL, edge data, and RIM. Between those two roles, I led applied AI, recommender systems, and fraud detection efforts at Mindbody. I received the inaugural UChicago Rising Stars in Data Science award and I am an AWS Certified Machine Learning Specialist.

My interest has always been in real world applications of machine learning and the broader idea of using data for good. I hold a PhD in Mechanical Engineering with a focus on applied machine learning from Tufts University, where I used data driven models to study electric power grids, climate systems, and ecological interactions. My research has appeared in KDD, Data Science in Science, Environment Systems and Decisions, Environmental Research Communication, and IOP Science.

I also earned an MSc in Engineering with Distinction and a BSc First Class (Hons) from the University of Edinburgh and the University of Ibadan, respectively, which helped shape my early interest in data and systems. I am originally from Nigeria and have lived in Scotland, Boston, and New Hampshire. Outside of work, I enjoy football, I support Manchester United, and I love being outdoors.
